  1. Lets try.

First, the points gap and timing settings must be correct.

The point system is verry basic although there are some interrupters that can cause the plugs not to spark.

First there is the safety kill switch that interrupts the wire from the ignition key to the coil. 2nd, the shift interruptor switch that bridges the contact points so the coil does not discharge to the plugs and 3rd the shift switch that prevents the engine to start when shifted into gear but mostly this one is in between the starter wire and starter solenoid.

Now, when you turn on the ignition there should be at least 8-10 volts measured between the coil + and neg -terminal of the battery or engine base. This voltage is coming from the ignition key with the safety kill switch in between and a risistant or resistant wire.

When you turn the starter the voltage must stay and normaly become 12 volts as starter boost.

When the starter solenoid engages the starter motor it also gives 12v direct to the coil + terminal.

If no voltage is measured between the coil + and neg - batt terminal check the above wiring or wire the + coil direct to + batt and see if it sparks now.

When measuring between the coil negative - and coil+ while cranking the engine over the voltage must drop and rise every time the points open and close.

(Points opened must be zero volts between coil - and coil +)

If the voltage dont drop to zero volts when the points open check if the shift interruptor switch (on the shift linkage plate on back of engine (where shift cables attach) is not engaged you can remove one of the wires from it to be sure or, the points do not open so the coil does not discharge.

To short wire the system: run a wire from the batt + direct to the coil+, connect the single wire comming from the distributor (points) to the - side of the coil and disconnect the other wires to the coil. If still no spark re- check the points gap, timing settings and the coil.

Side note: The condenser must be in relation to the coil and is there to absorb point sparks. If the condensor is bad the points are bad to.

    Good luck!

    Frank.

  2. Do you have spark cooming from the coil?  If you do, then you need to check you're points, if no, then check for power gong to the coil.  Sometimes, the soleniod goes bad that supplies power to the coil.

If you do have spark coming from the coil, then you need to replace your points and condenser.

Hopefully you got the coil you replaced for free, otherwise you could have saved that money to buy the book to properly diagnose it.  Hope that helps.

  3. Go to a public library and look through the books. Remove the dist. cap. Turn the motor over by hand, (key OFF), until the points are closed. Take all small screwdriver and gently open the points, do you have a spark? At the library find pre 1972 Chevy car manuals and follow the ignition system troubleshooting procedures.

    Hope this helps!

  4. i have no idea but i suggest saving a bit of money and getting a professional to have a look at it as it could save you alot of trouble and money in the long run.

  5. If you plan on doing anything yourself, you need to purchase the proper service manual that covers the year of manufacture for your mercrusier.

These manuals walk through the entire troubleshooting process and give important tips or warnings about vital information.

    Regarding cash crunch:

Boats suck money in like a vacuum, if you can't afford to do regular maintenance or repairs on it and pay for gas to use it, you might want to change to a more economical boat choice or sell it.  You gotta pay to play on the water...

  6. Do you have Spark coming out of the coil , u can use a screwdriver short to ground or the coil wire short to ground.  you should see a good blue spark. if you have that make shure you are timed right . pull the first plug stuff a rag in the number one cylinder and spin the engine over. and check the rotor that its pointed to number one. 18436572
