No front runners in manager interviews, says Boston Red Sox Larry Lucchino
As the Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein left the club and joined the Chicago Cubs after appalling defeats in the month of September, Ben Cherington took charge and started his operations to assemble the club for the 2012 season.
The club now turned their attentions to hire a suitable manager and for this, the Chief Executive Officer Larry Lucchino has said on Friday morning, that the club will possibly start the interviews sometime in the next week. According to the sources, about
eight to ten candidates are in the final list.
With many waiting to take charge of one of the committed clubs of the American League East division, many predictions have already come into the market. Although the club has not identified any name publically, but a combination of aggressive and determined
people are on the list.
"I wouldn't read too much into who comes in first (to interview)," Lucchino said on Boston sports radio station WEEI. "We're at eight or 10 names and we just want to get the interview process beginning."
Among those who may be given more attention are the Cleveland Indians’ bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr, Tampa Bay Rays’ bench coach Dave Martinez, Boston Red Sox bench coach DeMarlo Hale, Philadelphia Phillies’ Triple-A manager Ryne Sandberg and bench coach
Pete Mackanin.
Lucchino, however declined any speculations about the top runners. He rejected the rumours saying the club has not ranked the candidates yet.
"There's been plenty of due diligence that's been going on the last several days," Lucchino said. "Ben (Cherington) has gotten recommendations. People have thrown their hats in the ring."
Although the possible time for the interviews has been announced, but Lucchino has still not given any time frame to hire the final candidate, who will replace the Sox ex-manager Terry Francona. After the club went for their worst 7-20 for the month of September
and botched a nine outing dominance over the Tampa Bay Rays for the American League Wild Card in playoffs, the Sox declined to take Francona’s 2012 option.
According to Lucchino, the final decision will take about two weeks. He recalled the time when the club hired Francona in December 2003, but they still did not have to face any serious issues in the 2004 season.
