No health insurance?

I don't have health insurance anymore because my COBRA coverage is over now. Because I have a pre-existing condition other health care companies won't take me. I have tried to find a job that offer health insurance, but seems very difficult right now.

Because I own half of the house where I live. I been told that I can’t qualify for any low income health care services. I don't know what to do? I don’t even have a job, and I’m considered well off to qualify for something. Have anybody out had this problem? I live in California.

  1. I don't know who told you that having a house disqualifies you. In CA and alot of other states, your home is exempt (not counted). Your problem as I see it is that you don't meet the disability requirements. In CA you either have to be a child or if you are an adult, you have to be totally disabled for at least 30 days AND meet the financial requirements in order to qualify for medi-cal. You don't say when your COBRA coverage ended, but usually the same carrier can offer you an individual conversion policy and your previous coverage will count towards any waiting period for pre-existing. (If the break in coverage hasn't been too long). Unfortunately, if they won't or don't offer that your only hope is to find an employer that offers health insurance.

  2. IF you just lost your COBRA, you may be able to use HIPAA to force a company to take you on--you have to have lost that group health insurance (COBRA counts) within the last 63 days if I recall and through no fault of your own (no fraud or such). You will pay through the nose for insurance, but it's an option.

See if you can get a high deductible plan maybe--could be worth it to you as you'll have high premiums if you're a guarantor class patient.

Do you qualify for a high-risk pool? Sometimes that could solve your problem.

    Good luck.

BTW, maybe look at this--if you like it, contact your legislators and see if they'd do a state version of the plan:

QUALITY, ACCESSIBLE, AFFORDABLE health care for all.

That means preventative care (physical with follow up). Real medication (no Medicare "donut holes" the really ill are ripped off again.) No bogus ridiculously low "caps" on needed medical procedures. No abuse of the ER. No paying for the silly with the sniffles to go to the doc for free. No more bankruptcies over medical bills. I want THIS plan that ends abuse of the taxpayer, takes the burden off employers, provides price transparency, and ends the rip-off of the US taxpayer at the hands of greedy insurance CEOs (which has been repeatedly documented).

Read the PDF, not the blurb, for the bulk of the plan. Book is searchable on Amazon.com
