No more alcohol in clubhouse: Boston Red Sox Feature:
It looks like the Boston Red Sox are cleaning up their act for the upcoming 2012 Major League Baseball regular season. It was recently reported that manager Bobby Valentine has put a ban on allowing players to consume alcohol in the clubhouse.
After the disaster from last season, as the Red Sox lost a nine-game lead in their Division and missed the postseason due to a very poor late season performance, Valentine has seemed to have put his foot down. Also, rumours from last season swirled about
players drinking beer in the clubhouse during the games hit the media and embarrassed the Red Sox organisation. It looks like the changes are being done to project a positive approach in the League.
The club was a thoroughly embarrassed last year as they lost too many games and slipped out of contention for the postseason. The Red Sox are full of talent and are considered to be one a top tier team in MLB. It looks like the Red Sox are definitely trying
to clean up their image amongst their angry fans this year. This recent move by Valentine is a positive one, as it shows a keen interest by the Red Sox to make some serious changes in the way they go about the business of baseball.
Valentine put in his plan to ban alcohol and the players seem to understand the reasons behind the recent move. The players are now going to be accountable for their actions regardless of the outcome on the field. Valentine will be looking to instill a positive
and responsible decorum amongst the players during the regular season. The new manager has told his players, “not to embarrass themselves or the team, the community, their teammates, themselves. I don’t think that’s a new rule. That’s a long-standing rule
of life.”
Most of the players like David Ortiz are okay with the recent changes to the Red Sox policy. “We’re not here to drink. We’re here to play baseball,” the slugger said. “This ain’t no bar. If you want to drink, drink at home.”
The ban on alcohol is a good move on the part of Valentine. He understands the importance of promoting a clean image amongst the fans and the other teams in the League. After their disastrous end to last season, the team must do whatever they can to gain
the confidence of their loyal fan base. For an extremely talented team like the Red Sox to not make the playoffs is a serious situation. Given the fact they had a decent nine-game lead and squandered their chances with their poor performance, for the organisation
the season became something that they wanted to forget.
Although for many critics, the Red Sox have a lot to still do to redeem themselves from last season. As Spring Training is starting, it will be interesting to see how the different changes have affected the team and their performance on the field. The Red
Sox will be looking to put in a good performance and get ready for a long arduous regular season. The players understand that they are accountable for their behaviour both on and off the field and they will be hoping that the fans will embrace them after their
last season debacle.
