I'll post this question twice for different feedback.

I noticed in a music yahoo chatroom there are about 15 regulars who are in AU. 9 of them are dyslexic and from different areas of au.

Anyone know why most Aussies are dyslexic?

  1. ur observation is correct .

the sysmtoms are visible when u see the crowds in cricket match

  2. Saying that Aussies are dyslexic just because you observed 15 chatters may be a sweeping statement or an over-generalization.  I guess, not only aussies are dyslexic.  Many of the chatters i know are "dyslexic" and that includes me.  I think it has nothing to do with dyslexia, but with the speed that people type their words when they chat....  Most of the time, we do not check for  grammar, syntax or spelling, etc...  People just hit the enter key excitedly to save time.  In fact, we even cut or spel wrds w/o d use of vwls and sometimes just use abbreviated phrases like lol, brb or imho... thus, the dyslexia.  i hope this will help... gtg...

  3. 15 isn't a big enough sample to make such a broad claim on.

  4. I have found that very rarely do many people admit to being dyslexic or having a LD unless prompted.

And I have met many dyslexics on Yahoo, but whether they were from Aussie I can't say, it maybe that those you have met, openly admit they are dyslexic is because they know others in the chat-room are dyslexic and feel comfortable to talk about it.

Both my daughter & I are dyslexic, which can make for reading and writing interesting. I only know of about 6 other people who are dyslexic (2 were students), out of hundreds of family, friends, students and colleagues.

The only reason I knew the 2 students were dyslexic, was after I told the class I was dyslexic, and that if anyone had any learning problems or were dyslexic, that they were to come and tell me so I can make arrangements for them to do the test, if needed. These students told me that they were not going to say anything, but as I had told them I was dyslexic, they felt that they could admit it to me.

I am open about being dyslexic due to my being a sessional teacher, and a Youth & Disability support worker, and some times I do make some mistakes, that causes a few giggles, I had one person who thought I was stupid, until I said I was dyslexic, and that is why I had mixed up a word with a similar sounding word (they later apologized).

  5. I think that 15 is not a big enough number to take a proper survey either. I don't think that most aussies are dyslexic...I think you've just made a generalisation based on your personal experiences...which is fair enough...it just isn't exactly true. As an Aussie, myself, I've only ever met one dyslexic person. She was born with a mild form but overcame it before she hit her teens. From my experience, hardly any Aussie's are dyslexic...from yours most are...I think these are two extremes and from them both it is reasonable to draw a safe middle point with the figures.

Also, how do you know that these Aussies are dyslexic? Is it because of the way they type in chatrooms? Because a lot of bad typos do come out in chatrooms when you're trying to reply fast. I know I've delivered an inside-out word before on Windows Live Messenger.
