No one tipped on Indianapolis Colts radar as team launches search for new head coach – NFL News
The Indianapolis Colts are reported to have launched a search for a new head coach after release of Jim Caldwell from his coaching duties with them on Tuesday, January 17, 2012.
Caldwell finished his stay with the Colts with a 26-22 record.
His record includes the 2011 National Football League (NFL) regular season, which ended with only two wins and a massive 14 losses, as it was seen a turning point for many of the Colts’ officials, including the coach.
Caldwell was sacked by the Indianapolis Colts’ owner, Jim Irsay. It had followed the firing of the vice chairman, Bill Polian, and his son Chris Polian, the Colts' general manager.
Despite the owner calling the Caldwell sacking a difficult decision to be made, the move was seen very much in the coming as fallout of the Colts' poor performance in the regular season.
"This was a difficult decision", Irsay said.
"I wanted to make sure we took all the time we needed to make sure it was the right decision. ... And just like 14 years, ago, it's a big change for the franchise and at the same time, there's players, coaches, many people on the staff that will go into
the new day and get on with the work of 2012".
The owner defended his decision of sacking Caldwell, saying it was essential to continue their process of rebuilding the team, which he said was in a transition phase since the regular season came to an end.
Irsay is reported to have had a meeting with his new general manager, Ryan Grigson, who has taken the place of their former GM, Chris Polian, to discuss the prospects of hiring a new head coach to replace Caldwell.
Grigson has been in discussions with his employer over rebuilding the team for almost every day since his hiring a couple of weeks ago.
His first task is now to find a new head coach for the team that is expected to be followed by the team’s line-up reshuffling.
In spite of the launch of their search for a new coach, no name has apparently come up so far as their main and potential target.
Some reports have hinted that the team in the light of the discussions and suggestions from the new manager is focusing the offensive officials as their next coach prospects.
If the Colts go for an offensive coordinator to be their new head coach, they will be the second outfit to do so.
Jacksonville Jaguars have already taken an offensive co-ordinator from the Atlanta Falcons to be their leading man.
The offense could be the Colts priority, in context of their chances and eligibility for the signing of new draft quarterback next season, which will certainly benefit their attacking squad on the roster.
