So I just graduated with a bachelors degree from university and am taking the yaer off to work before doing my masters... I have been applying for jobs for MONTHS now and haven't been able to get anything, I keep hearing that I'm overqualified, I've already dumbed down my resume but I can't just take off that I went to university because then I will have a four year gap of nothiningness... I'm so frustrated now that I'm at the point of lying and completely dumbing down my resume... I can't even get an entry level office job because I'm too overqualified!!! <--- thats what I was told in an interview today... which is ridiculous because how am I supposed to get experience if no one will hire me... I can't even get a job at a grocery store because I live in a small town and the jobs are taken by high school students or ppl that have no education. I really dont know what to do.. I've applied on every job site I can find, I've driven around and passed out resumes in person... should I explain to ppl that I'm only looking for work for the year? I've been leaving that info out because I think they may not hire me because I'll only be working for a year... any suggestions?

  1. OK Lo here is what i do real time my own business

I drive people around or just pick them up at supermarkets and drive them home $5 a pop

$15 - $25 depending on where and how long time is driving them

also i pick up metals and take them auto recyclying yard easy $50 - $150 per day

Copper Brass Steel and iron only !

aluminimum you need too much of to get nice money and your dealing with cans that contained soda or beer and are disgusting

  2. How small is the town? If it's really small, then you definitely can (and want) to let people know that you are looking for a job between degrees. The "overqualified" pretty much translates into "we're afraid we'll hire you and train you and you'll be gone in 3 weeks". Let them know that you're there until July 31, 2009 (or whatever). They should take advantage of cheap, smart labor. ;)

If you're in a larger area, or can commute to one, definitely look at temp work through a temp agency. Specifically, office temp work. Get work doing data entry, answering phones, etc. The pay should be tolerable and you'll have an agency finding the jobs for you. Agencies often provide limited benefits, too.

Another recommendation is working at a bar/restaurant. They are used to people who stay less than one year. Plus it's a great job skill to have while you're in grad school; you can work one weekend a month as a bartender and make some extra money. Maybe stretch the truth a bit and say that you are planning on going back to graduate school within 2 years but nothing is firm at this point. (Hey, it's technically the truth!)

Good luck. (I took a year off between undergrad and grad school, too. I worked retail but the pay was pretty rotten so I wouldn't recommend it.)
