Question:

No power to dishwasher or outlet above. Please Help!

I checked the breakers. All breakers are on. The dishwasher just quit. I think the outlet on counter above dishwasher is on same breaker because it isn't working either. Why would I have no power and yet the breakers aren't triggered? the whole breaker box is about 3 years old. Any ideas on what to try that isn't too technical? I can do minor electrical but nothing difficult.

  1. call an electrician he will resolve all ur problems.

  2. my house has 2 breaker box's , one is in a closet on the other end of the house?

  3. Look for a GFI reset.

All outlets and appliances near a water source must have a GROUND FAULT INTERUPTION device.  It keeps you from getting zapped if you drop the blender in the sink.

    There are two types.

    1.  Breaker type,,,, identified by a yellow button on the breaker that says RESET/TEST/ or something like that.  It will be obvious because it will look different than all the rest.

    2.  OUTLET TYPE.... most common.  It's a outlet with two buttons,,,one says TEST, the other says RESET.  If the GFI is tripped, the RESET button may be out further than normal.

The trick is,,,, you only need one of these devices on a circuit, so the offending outlet may not be the one you see right above the dishwasher.  It could be another one on the counter, in the bathroom, or in the garage.  Check them all.

Push in the test, push in the reset.

To make life easier,,,, put a radio on loud, and plug it into the outlet above the dishwasher, so you know when you get the right one.  Or have a helper.

    Good luck.

EDIT - Only one ground fault for the bath rooms,,,, in the breaker box.  OK.  Does this also cover any outlets you have outside?  These also must have a GFI on them.  If all of these are good, let's go back to the original problem,,

    a. dishwasher wired direct with no power.

    b. outlet above dishwasher dead

A failure of the dishwasher would not affect the outlet unless it tripped a breaker, or burned out the wiring connections that join the above outlet with the circuit.  While the failed connection is rare, it is possible.  If you are comfortable, kill the breaker for the outlet, pull off the cover plate, and inspect the wires and connections on the recepticle itself.  It is a good bet that the dishwasher is fed from the outlet, with incoming power on one side of the recepticle, and the dishwasher on the other.  If all looks good, go the next outlet up-stream from the dead outlet, and do the same thing.  If pulling the wires out of the boxes is scarey for you, electrician is the way to go.  Dishwasher repairman can do nothing without electicity on the unit.  Can you keep me posted?  I'm intriqued by this.

  4. I would cycle the breakers some time they blow but don't look blown. The bigger problem is why did you blow the breaker if it is do the an electrical short turning it back on is not a good idea. if it is because you overloaded the circuit (to many appliance running at same time) then your ok. but know why it blew before you reset it and correct the problem

  5. See answer # 1....sounds as if somewhere in the line there is a ground fault plug that has popped...reset and see if that doesn't cure the problem.

  6. smell anything burning?

does the dishwasher have a fuse of some kind built into it before the breaker box?

overload on the outlet?  dishwasher shouldnt be connected to an outlet in the first place, unless you mean its a dishwasher that plugs into the outlet.
