No power to new dishwaher?

Heres the deal. I swapped out my old washer for a new (used) washer. Of course I turned off the power at the breaker for the install. Now that I have the new (used) washer in there is no power. I have cliked the breaker on and off but still there is no power to the "new" washer.

The old (broke) one used to buzz when it was still installed so I hooked it back up, but there is no more buzzing. WHy is the electircity gone? The house was built in 2000. Did I blow a fuse or somthing?

  1. Are you certain the "new" one works?

Sometimes, a circuit breaker will become physically locked, by not being exercised or having to deal with an overcurrent that would cause it to trip. It IS possible that by opening the breaker, it was damaged. Try replacing the breaker and see what happens. Before you do that, use a multi-meter or a voltage detector to see if there is voltage present at the dishwasher end of the conductors.

If voltage is present at the dishwasher end, check to see if there is the same voltage between the s***w-post on the breaker and the panel (ground) or the grounded (neutral) terminal for the service entrance conductor, or between the breaker terminal and the "neutral" bus in the panel. If the answer is "no" at the DW, and "no" at the breaker, you probably need a new breaker (make sure it is listed for use in your panel). If the answer is "no" at the DW, and "yes" at the panel, either there is a short in one of the conductors, or a splice opened up somewhere.

Check all of the connections, especially those in the junction box supplying the DW. Check the neutral splices, too. Often the dishwasher and the Garbage disposal will share a neutral, but be supplied from adjacent panel locations. Check to see if the disposal works. If it doesn't, and it is sharing the neutral with the dishwasher, you have an open neutral condition; track it down, and you should be golden.

  2. Is the D/W plug under the sink loose I have found this many times, and sometimes the outlet is burnt up too.The heater current will do this!

  3. disconnect power from d/w,reset breaker one more time, use a meter to check for voltage at end wire, if no voltage you either cut the wire or you were unlucky enough to have had the breaker go bad at the time of install or you simply made a bad connection w/ the "new" washer. one last thought the "new" is defective also

  4. i'm guessing u burnt the breaker.....
