No race has been crucial up until now – Jenson Button
Jenson Button has been attacking since the past 2 races with a 2nd place finish at the Italian Grand prix and a fourth in Singapore while his McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton has been on the back foot as he was not able to finish 3 out of the past
4 races. Jenson Button is just 25 points, which is one race win behind the leader Mark Webber. The top five drivers are indeed very close and Jenson believes that McLaren is definitely in the game and they are keeping their fingers crossed for good results
at the final four races.
The Singapore grand prix was an extremely long and tough race, but Jenson Button was happy with his overall performance and the result. The reigning world champion believes that he got the best of his McLaren and it would have been great if he finished in
front of Mark Webber. However, Jenson hopes to maintain the momentum and finish with maximum points in upcoming races.
It was disappointing though to see that McLaren did not have the pace as compared to the Ferraris and Red Bulls at the Singapore grand prix but that was expected as McLaren has not been strong on slower circuits like Hungary and Monaco this year. Singapore
is one of the highest downforce tracks on the Formula 1 calendar so it is not a place where McLaren were expected to perform to its fullest. However, the coming four races will be interesting and they will suite the McLaren team more. In addition, this year’s
championship can go either way and it is still very difficult to predict what would happen next.
Yes, every result is very important but we cannot call every race pivotal. It is more about the pace a driver can carry during the whole season and it is quite funny how Singapore has been one of the few races that affected the overall standings this season.
Every race is pivotal in its own way however, it is more about the points now rather than a performance at a single race.
“Okay, Fernando’s (Alonso) had two good races, and is right in the thick of things, but Lewis (Hamilton) has retired from the last two races, and he’s still right there, and both Sebastian (Vettel) and me are ready to strike”, he said.
The new points system has definitely enhanced what people think of the standings but it is still quite difficult to understand the points system this year as everyone is used to last year’s system. If we look at Jenson Button’s points in terms of last year’s
system, the reigning world champion is just 10 points off Mark Webber and Lewis might be just 8 or 9 points behind him.
With just four races to go, that is not much at all and it is easily achievable. In short, it is any one’s game out of the top five drivers. However, every race is pivotal from now on and it will be very important for the McLaren drivers to at least finish
each race, in order to secure this year’s title.
Jenson Button is very confident, relaxed and happy before going in to the final five races. “For the second year running, I’m right in the hunt for the world championship. I’m already the world champion and I’ve still got every chance of holding on to my
title”, he added.
That is what the Formula 1 drivers are born to do, race until the very end and that is the main reason why Jenson joined Vodafone McLaren Mercedes according to him, to utilize these opportunities.
“The next race is Suzuka, a circuit I love. I’m going to spend some time in Japan beforehand, it will be a good chance to relax and to get ready for what I think will be a great weekend”, said Jenson.
