The retired striker expressed that the Blancos are still having a successful season despite their European exit last night.
Former Real Madrid star, Emilio Butragueno, has taken out time to emphasize that the Spanish giants have no reason to sulk in disappointment as their exploits in the current season’s campaign are enough to redeem their elimination from the UEFA Champions
League.
Jose Mourinho’s men locked horns with German Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich, in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night. The match that took place at the Santiago Bernabeu saw Los Merengues knocked-out of the prestigious tournament
as a result of a thrilling penalty shoot-out.
Having lost the first leg of the last four fixture with a score of 2-1, Wednesday’s match represented a dire situation for the Spanish capital-based club as they were in impending need for a win. Although they finished the 90 minutes of the game being in
a 2-1 lead, the match had to continue on to extra time.
As both sides failed to find the back of the net in the additional 30 minutes, the game proceeded to penalties. To the dismay of the home crowd, the Blancos could only successfully convert 1 penalty whereas the Bavarians scored three times from the spot.
Hence, Madrid’s European campaign came to a halt at the hands of the Germans.
Although the Santiago Bernabeu faithful are still gloomy about their team’s exit from Europe, Butragueno has argued that Madrid still have reason to celebrate as they are in the driving seat to become this year’s La Liga Champions.
According to Real Madrid’s official website, the 48-year-old quoted:
"The team are having an exceptional season. Our numbers in La Liga are incredible and we've gone very far in the Champions League, which is expected of us. We cannot ask our players to do more."
"The team tried everything to reach the final and we're proud of our players. We faced a team with great character that managed to recover quickly from conceding two goals in the first half. We also improved but were unable to break their defensive line.”
In continuance of their Spanish La Liga campaign, Real Madrid will play host to Sevilla at the Bernabeu on Sunday.
