the last time my doc wrote out my percocet (which I take for severe pain in my jaw) it said no refills. If I take it to the pharmacy will they call my doctor to get a refill, or do I just not get anymore?

  1. The doc cannot phone in a refill on percocet because it's a highly-addicting substance and usually, no refills are given.

Painkillers (and other types of drugs ... such as those for ADHD, for example) have the potential for abuse and are closely monitored.

You'll have to either call or visit your doctor to request a refill.  You must take the script IN YOUR HAND to the pharmacy to have it filled.

  2. Call the pharmacy and ask if they will request the refill for you.  The doctor may want you to come in again before renewing the prescription.

  3. Percocet is highly addictive, so doctors like to keep an eye on patients who use it.  If you still need it when your script runs out, the doctor will simply write another.

  4. Percocet, or oxycodone with tylenol, is a schedule II narcotic. Due to federal restrictions, it is against the law for MDs to put refills on these types of medications. When you are close to running out of the medication and still feel as if you need it, contact your MD. Some MDs will refill the medication if your pharmacy calls to request another refill, but most MDs require an appointment to re-evaluate your symptoms. The key to getting timely refills on a medication like this is to give your MD AMPLE time to address the request. That way if your MD does require an appointment, you can schedule one before you run out of the medication. Also, for myself, since I take narcotic pain medication for a chronic condition, I ask the MD their protocol on refilling these types of medications so I know their 'rules' in advance.
