No risk involved in one-year deal terms Boston Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask -NHL Update
It was hard to believe that Boston Bruins made a one-year offer to their only mainstream goalie and even more surprising than that was Tuukka Rask actually agreeing to it without negotiating further as the 2011 Stanley Cup champion team no longer has Vezina
Trophy winning goalie Tim Thomas.
Thomas, a veteran superstar goalie, decided to take next season off and fortunately, has not announced any sort of retirement plans just yet. A weak past season forced Tim Thomas to rethink himself and the position he plays, which he plans on doing after
spending time with family and friends over the year.
While Rask might not be completely content with a just a one-year deal which is worth $3.5 million, there are some things someone needs to do in order to prove their worth.
"You can’t really think of it that way, because you’re kind of digging yourself a hole there, but sometimes you’ve got to think what’s best for the team and what’s best for yourself," Rask said Thursday, according to WEEI Radio. "I think this is a really
good scenario for all of us."
There would be no surprise if Boston Bruins locked Rask on for a much longer duration period after he impresses them during the up and coming 2012-2013 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, but only time will tell whether that will happen or not.
Rask has mixed performance evaluations from analysts, with some terming him much bigger than Tim Thomas while others regarding him as a goalie who may not last long in the top spot.
Becoming the number one goalie for Boston Bruins has always been something Rask has yearned for and with Tim Thomas taking the team to a 2011 Stanley Cup championship, it looked like the time would never come, until now.
"You know, I’ve been waiting for a few years now," Rask said. "It’s going be interesting to see how I handle it and it’s going be a challenge, but I’m always up for a challenge and you've just got to make the most of it and have fun."
Boston Bruins will obviously feel the absence of Tim Thomas, that is if Rask is not able to fill in the gap.
