Question:

No sound coming from my PC?

I recently transferred files to a new computer and moved my old system to my home. However, since I have started using my old PC at home, I have had no sound coming from it at all. Is this a sound driver issue and if so, how do I go about re-installing? It runs Windows XP.

  1. Make sure your Sound Driver isn't disabled, it may have inadvertently disabled itself during shutdown:

Go to Device Manager (Start> RightClick My Computer> Properties> Hardware Tab> Device Manager) and right click on your sound driver and choose enable. If not, try updating the driver, that will effectively restore it to factory settings if there's an update available.

If you don't know the name of you Sound Driver, so to Start> Run> dxdiag. Now go to the Sound Tab and any sound hardware installed is listed.

If that still doesn't work, the driver may have been uninstalled. If so, go to your computer's manufacturer's website and go to the "Support" section. There should be a link for drivers. You will need to know your computer's model, but once you enter that it will give you and option to download any missing drivers. Just find the Sound Driver and install it.

    Hope that helps =]

  2. Okay, lemme make some sense of it... Say you had a Work computer & a older home computer. You left work, so you moved files to older home computer by crossover/USB disk/email/whatever other method.. Right?

How does this affect the already existing files on your older home computer?

I think its more a case of loose cables than a driver issue..

Check the device manager first. If no prolem is listed here, then get up & check the cables.. See if they are in the right jacks & that the adapter for the speakers is plugged in & that the terminal gets power.. Test some eother speakers.. or test these speakers with a music system..

If speakers work ok on music system & new speakers do not work on the old system & the adapter point is OK, & the volume level on the speakers is ok & its all the way up on the computer players.. THEN do we go for a Driver re install.. Not otherwise..

Yep I know thats a lot of work, but thats the list  ;-)

And only if all fails we go for re-installing windows

Do take care to unplug all USB devices & printers etc if you go for recovery (I'm sure, just a simple repair won't help) backup all your data on external drive & reinstall AV & antispyware soln the firts ting. Update them & OS before you do anything esle..
