No sound from my 2005 Corolla speakers

Hi. I have a 2005 Toyota Corolla and recently the sound stopped coming from the speakers. The radio turns on and the digital clock works--but no sound. When I turn the radio off and on a very slight clicking noise comes from the speakers but that is about all. Any ideas on how to fix? I called my local Toyota service center and they suggested buying a new factory radio to the tune of $1500. I thought I would try to troubleshoot common problems before making that kind of investment.
