No sound when playing DVD. My DVD player had no sound of late so just to check, I bought a new DVD

Question

My DVD player had no sound of late so just to check, I bought a new DVD player today and still no sound when playing a DVD. Sound on the TV is perfect. New cables, checked and rechecked all connections. I do not have the original remote control as the TV is 17 yrs old.
