  1. Every technique in BJJ has existed in Judo way before BJJ was even formed, and this is coming from someone who studies BJJ and Judo as well so I have no biases.

Judo people are generally VERY tough to deal with whether standing up or on the ground.

True, in a Judo tournement, Judo players have an advantage because they can't spend too much time on the ground thus effectively minimizing the chances for any sub work, but these rules won't apply in a real fight and an a Judoka can apply a RNC just as quickly as a BJJ student.

This said, BJJ has added a lot of sophistication to the art of submissions by focusing on transitions, combinations and the introduction to no-gi fighting.

Like any other fight, this will entirely depend on which fighter is successful in forcing the other to "play their game". No subwork if you can't take someone down, and you can't slam someone if they got you in the mount.

  2. Judo has ground fighting elements, but Judoka specialize more on standing aspects of grappling. i.e. clinching, gripfighting, off-balancing and throwing. There isn't a major focus in positional exchange and groundfighting in judo, whereas BJJ begins where judo ends. It's all about what happens on the ground. Positioning, escapes, and submissions. BJJ wins in pure groundfighting probably 90 percent of the time. (And yes, I am aware that Kimura (judo practitioner) defeated Helio Gracie back in the day)

  3. on youtube there's a sweet video of bj penn when he was a whitebelt destroying a bunch of judo blackbelts. i highly recommend you check it out.

  4. There's no way of knowing. It depends on what techniques they utilize.
