No surprise if Miguel Cabrera claims AL MVP – MLB Detroit Tigers News
Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout was unanimously named the American League Rookie of the Year on Monday but can he win the 2012 American League Most Valuable Player Award? Many believe he will garner support for the MVP award as well.
While Trout had an excellent first season with the Angels, Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera put together a season that very few have been able to put together in history of the game, leading the American League in average with a sensational .330 average, 139
RBI’s and 44 home-runs.
He also became the first player to win the Triple Crown Award since Carl Yastrzemski achieved this feat back in 1967. He was the first player to lead the league in all three categories since Frank Robinson in 1966.
Cabrera’s impressive season was no fluke though as he has been leading in all three Triple Crown categories since 2009 with a .331 average, 146 home-runs and 473 RBI’s.
The 2012 season was the second consecutive time Cabrera led the American League in batting average, becoming the first player from the Tigers to do so since Ty Cobb did it in three back-to-back seasons between 1917 and 1919.
What helped Cabrera win the Triple Crown Award in 2012 was his ability to come up with some big performances in pressure situations. His late season push for Triple Crown Award and MVP Award was a remarkable aspect of his game play.
Cabrera had a knack of hitting home-runs late in the game. He hit AL high .337 in the seventh inning or later, which is more than any other player in history of baseball. Cabrera seemed to be at the peak of his game in September and October, hitting home-runs
on a regular basis to prepare a strong MVP case. Although he was cooled in the post-season, what he managed to achieve during the regular season will be remembered for a very long time.
It will not be surprise to anyone if Cabrera is chosen over Trout as Yastrzemski, Robinson and Mickey Mantle, who won the Triple Crown Award, all went on to win the MVP Award.
