  1. For an American? Watch "The Kingdom." That'll lend some insight into how "safe" it would be. I know Dubai is in another country but it is the same. There are anti-Americans everywhere in the middle east.

The American guy beheaded was in Saudi Arabia. Saudia Arabia is a U.S. ally, in large part because we are their biggest customer and put them in their palaces. Nevertheless the sentiment of the government does not reflect the sentiment of the people there. That country and the UAE are the same. There are even "religious police," clerics who go around scrutinizing the every action of westerners/foreign workers, especially women. One woman was thrown in jail for having a coffee with an Arab man one-on-one. I don't know if that man came to her defense at all, or disowned her at that moment, but it was probably the latter.

  2. Dubai has some very, very strict laws, as well as some strict cultural practices. Being a tourist there is one thing -- living and working there, something very different.

If you really want to know about the country's laws and lifestyle, I suggest you buy Lonely Planet's guide to the country (I'm sure they have such). Each of their books has information on working in a particular country.

  3. Feudalism = Tax payer system

  4. True. They are rich, why tax? This also makes their economy supercharged strong. If only we could do that (sigh).

If you follow the strict rules of Sharia law, it is quite safe.

Most expatriots live in separate compounds and are very safe as long as you stay in them. You'll have everything you need, and be well paid. It does feel a bit like prison after a while.

Also, your mail, TV, radio, etc will be censored.

If you can live with these restrictions, it can be a good place to work for a while and sock away a pile of cash.

    Good luck to you!
