I wanted to go to New Zealand, which is my first choice, but they said they might now except me because of the strict restrictions against vegetarians. What the h**l is up with that?

  1. Vegetarians are most welcome don't worry.  It is quite normal.

Perhasp you have got confused about our agricultural laws when entering the country.  You can not bring any fruit/vegetables etc in to the country as they may contain pests that will damage our industries...but then you aren't allowed to bring meat in either. so....not sure who your source was for this info. but they are compleatly wrong!

    Have a great trip!

  2. I'm a New Zealander and know quite a few people that are vegetarians. They live well under no ridiclue or anything. I can assure you that we do not care wether you are a vegetarian or a meat eater, it just does not matter

  3. That is ridiculous.  I am vegeterian and am living in mid north Island in a farming and hunting area.  And every one accepts me.  Of course I do get the odd person thinking that they can get me to eat meat, but I just say good luck to them.  If the goverment didn't let vegeterians enter the country how come we have so many people here that can't eat meat due to their religion?  Don't listen to whoever is telling you this c**p and come on over.

  4. Umm I'm not sure where you heard that from. My auntie is a vegetarian and so are a lot of people here. Our meat industry is huge and most of our meals are meat, but no one is going to judge you, just eat whatever you want, and don't let that stop you from coming to NZ!!

    ...

  5. I dont know but who cares what people think if a beautiful place and if people talk c**p about you about being a vegitarian just ignore them or say at least i care about the planet unlike you.

They wont do anything to you lol if they want to sue you for not eating meat well than there retarded cuz that sue wont happen , you got the freedom to eat what you want .

So think about yourself not other people have a nice trip to new zealand :)

  6. I know a lot of vegetarians. we even have vegetarian resteraunts to cater for you strange people...ha ha. I have no idea where you heard that.

  7. I'm guessing that perhaps the people that told you about the 'restrictions' may have been misunderstood... I'm assuming that what they actually meant was that as an AFS student on exchange, there might be less families willing to accept a vegetarian student, than one who is meat-eating.  Vegetarianism is definitely not 'restricted' in any way within NZ, and I know many people who are such.  However, the majority of families hosting AFS students are likely to not be vegetarian, and therefore might not wish to host a vegetarian student, as they might feel that the student would be difficult to feed, if they're not used to cooking for vegetarians.  I'm sure that there are some families who are either vegetarian, or willing to cater for vegetarian AFS students, but I would think that perhaps the number of host families available for you to be assigned to would be much smaller than the number for a non-vegetarian student.  I would still apply for NZ if that's your first choice... it just may take longer to find a host family?  NZ is a really beautiful country, and I wish you all the best luck in finding a vege-friendly host family here.

  8. .I have lived in NewZealand as a vegetarian for many years. It's a true haven for vegetarians as they are big on fresh fruit and vegetables. many organic farms and the abundance and variety are wonderful, Like anywhere you will get a few people that find it strange. NewZealand is a big agricultural country , but really they have some great restaurants for Vegetarians . You won't find a problem .Even some supermarkets at the takeaway deli dept have some super choices for vegetarians

  9. what ?

better ask them http://www.vegsoc.org.nz/? lol surely is an open choice around the world...

  10. Huh? Who is they? There are no restritions against vegetarians in New Zealand. What would be the point of that? It would discourage tourists from visiting, and it would restrict the rights of its population. Whoever told you this is just pulling your leg, trust me.

  11. all meat eaters live there

  12. um lol

I know heaps of people who are vegeterian and i live in nz

  13. We have a lot of vegetarians here - where the h**l did you get that information - i'd ditch them!!

  14. I was in New Zealand in Nov. of this 2007, as a vegetarian for 4 years I found it very easy and very friendly to dine out. Most restaurants or deli's offer vegetarian dishes. I highly recommend going and dining on their fine fare!
