Noa Deane and Oscar Scanes survive the opening day of ASP 1-Star Championship Moves Open
Australia’s Noa Deane and Oscar Scanes got off to an ideal start at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Championship Moves Open by clinching top honours in the third and fourth heat of Round 1 (Round of 48) respectively that went down at Jan Juc
in Victoria, Australia, on Thursday, January 5.
The 1-Star ranking of the surfing event served to attract a number of competent surfers from all around Australia. While the competition was originally set to go down at Bells Beach, the event organisers shifted the event to Jan Juc to make the best of the
three-foot waves on offer at the latter site.
After getting off to an exciting start, the opening round of the competition moved to the third heat, pitting Deane against his fellow countrymen Jake Cumberland, Derek Bassed and Jared McHale.
Deane took an upper-hand in the four-man battle during the early minutes of the battle by locking a wave to exhibit his innovative moves and post a 5.75 on the score-board. After going through a number of waves, he eventually added an additional 6.35 to
his account, moving to a heat-total of 12.10 points. With his lead holding until the end, Deane advanced through into Round 2 (Round of 32).
Cumberland rounded out the runner-up place after scoring 5.50 points off his first business wave early in the heat and soon added an additional 3.50 points to his account to finish with a heat-total of 9.00 points. The second-place finished added him to
the Round 2 line-up.
Bassed finished the heat with a two-wave total of 8.90 points, which comprised of a 3.90 and 5.00-point wave, while McHale scored a total of 7.45 points off his best-two waves. The bottom-two finish resulted in the elimination of both the surfers from the
competition.
The fourth heat featured an intense battle between Scanes and his compatriot Jake Sylvester. Both the surfers fought tooth and nail for top honours until the very end, though Scanes eventually managed to get the better of his rival after finishing with a
heat-total of 11.75 points against the latter’s 11.00.
Sylvester’s remarkable effort did not go to waste as the runner-up place was good enough to carry him into the next round as well.
Australia’s Josh Johnson-Baxter finished in third place with a heat-total of 11.00 points, losing second place to Sylvester due to the latter’s greater single-wave score. Joel Ford rounded out the bottom position with 7.50 points, which comprised of a 3.50
and 4.00-point wave. Both Johnson-Baxter and Ford got eliminated from the competition.
With the conclusion of the fourth heat, the first round of ASP 1-Star Championship Moves Open moved on to the next battle, keeping the exciting surfing action running at Jan Juc.
