Nobbs development plans for the Indian hockey team: Hockey News
On June 29, Michael Jack Nobbs was appointed as the new national hockey coach for the senior men’s team of India. Nobbs shared his views about the future development plans that he will be following for the team’s improvement.
Even though the top most priority for the team is to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games, however it is equally important to earn back the team’s lost glory as one of the world’s finest hockey teams.
Nobbs will be working hard into getting the team all sett to feature in the December’s Champions Trophy followed by the Olympic qualifier in February that are both to be held on home-ground in New Delhi.
He spoke to media, “Indian hockey has an attractive style. I have grown up on Indian hockey and now I want to give something back to India. Australian hockey is hugely influenced by India. We still play the Indian style. There are many Anglo-Indian
coaches in Australia. I have many Indian friends. Australian team has been successful and so can India.”
Since the end of Jose Brasa’s contract in the 2010 Asian Games in November, the Indian hockey team had no foreign coach and the deputy coach, Harendra Singh, took on the training cap for coaching the team at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, which was very
disappointing.
This was the reason why a foreign coach became a top priority for the federation and Nobbs was selected as the best man for the job.
According to Nobbs, the team’s performance kept on declining that can only get back on the track if the centre of focus improves. Nobbs believes that the team not just needs a coach, but also requires the support of the management, players and fans.
When asked about the development plans for the team, Nobbs stated that firstly he will determine the present standing of the team by talking to the players and estimating the scenario and then a lot of procedures will be followed. Despite the importance
of making it into the 2012 London Olympics, long term plans are equally important for the team’s development.
