Question:

Nobel Prize in Medicine snubs?

I understand how Jonas Salk, or Dr. Sabin could be denied the Prize for their individual efforts to find a cure for Polio, really, I do ! But how about recent brakthroughs like Viagra, or unwanted hair removal. The newest procedure, hymen reconstruction, is still hush-hush. The point is, they all deserve consideration from the Nobel Prize Committee on Medicine. Don't you agree?

  1. You are absolutely right ,but its all about politics.

  2. The Russian scientist Rinat Akchurin, who operated Boris Yeltsin, probably deserves the Nobel Prize.

  3. While the Nobel typically relies on the advancement of a particular field as their main consideration for the winner, there are other areas of focus.  They also look at the ethical and practical matters of the science as well.  Do you think they would give the Peace Prize to Al Gore if he created peace by killing all the people who were bad?  Probably not, and the same goes for medicine.  While unwanted hair removal or hymen reconstruction may be medical break-throughs, they do little for the overall improvement of mankind, which is why they are not readily considered by the Nobel committee.  Yes, they deserve consideration, but they are not going to get it because their aim is different from what people are looking to exemplify excellence in their field.

  4. Duh, a little plastic surgery can't really make you a virgin again.  And I think it's despicable that drug companies spend more money developing aphrodisiacs than they do fighting disease.

Now, if medical scientists were permitted to fully explore the realm of stem cell capabilities, hmmm--who knows?
