I am arguing with a friend about nobility titles for the UK or wherever. Is there any title above the king or queen? How about "Sovereigns and Sovereignty" or "British House of Lords ". Help me please!! I cannot lose this arguement! I must find who is over the king or queen (of england).

Thank you for your help.....

  2. 1 thing: search da' web brow :D

  3. isn't british nobility, with terms of kings and queens and princes, wholly symbolic?

i believe there is no legal monarchy, that the queen cannot enact any binding decisions, and that the actual power rests with the PM and House of Lords, who, therefore, are above the Queen and any other "nobles," as the nobles are just playing a part in a long-running, now powerless, facade of the times of monarchy.

  4. A Sovereign is a King or Queen. The British House of Lords is part of parliament and way below the rank of King or Queen. A life peer (who sits in the House of Lords) is either a Lord (Baron is an equivalent title) or Baronness who holds the title for life. A herefitary peer can no longer sit in the House of lords unless he is one of the 92 who were allowed to remain after the House was reformed a few years back, if one of those 92 dies or retires then the place is taken by another elected by those remaining.

  5. There is no higher title than King or Queen....after that come the princes and princesses and then the nobles....the Dukes etc.

The highest rank is held by the Emperor in Japan and he is the only living emperor now.   The title of Empress of India held by the British Queen has now elapsed as India has its own independence.

A sovereign has the sole rights of monarchy but as we have a parliament the King or Queen do not have sovereign rights. The husband of the Queen unless a King or Prince in his own right gets the title of Duke and not Prince.

The House of Lords houses only Lords who are further down the list of noblity so I am afraid you have lost your bet.

Prince Phillip was a prince before he married the queen and was Prince Phillip of Greece and Denmark.

  6. The queen answers only to God.

  7. the monarch holds the top title.

If the monarch is male (king) then his wife can be called a queen.

If the monarch is female (queen)  then her husband is called a prince.

so technically a king is higher than a queen in this sense.

  8. Sorry. The highest title is that of King/Queen Regent. At one time, the UK monarch was also and Emperor/Empress.

This is the order of precedence for titles. Please note that royal forms of Duke,Marquess, and the like are higher than the merely titled aristocracy.

    King/Queen Regent

Queen/Prince Consort (wife or husband of the monarch)

Prince/Princess: these people usually bear other titles as well. They can also be a Royal Duke/Duchess,Royal Marquess/Marchioness,Royal Earl/Countess,Royal Viscount/Viscountess,

    Royal Baron/Baroness

Then there are the titled aristocracy, the Peerage(non-royals):

    Duke/Duchess

    Marquess/Marchioness

    Earl/Countess

    Viscount/Viscountess

    Baron/Baroness

The Peerage are The House of Lords.

  9. well its a constitutional monarchy..... although lacking in a constitution..........

the queen is the head of state

the prime minister is the head of government

this has some more info on this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliamenta...

  10. there is noone above the king or queen in the uk

  11. The queen is the sovereign and at the top. At the moment there is no king, but there will be next time. The house of lords is quite a way down the order really.
