Nobuyuki Osawa and Tim Macdonald emerge triumphant in Round 2 at Sooruz Lacanau Pro
Japan’s Nobuyuki Osawa and Australia’s Tim Macdonald continued to look impressive at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 5-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro as they took out their respective Round 2 (Round of 128) heats that went down at the Grande Plage in Lacanau, France, on Tuesday, August 14.
Osawa claimed top honours in the third heat, while Basque Country’s Ethan Egiguren finished behind him in runner-up place to advance to the third round (Round of 96). Portugal’s Joao Guedes finished in third place, while Australia’s Teale Vanner had to settle for fourth place, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The fourth heat saw Macdonald and Spain’s Vicente Romero finished in first and second place respectively to secure their place in the next round, while France’s Pierre-Valentin Labo and Portugal’s Diogo Appleton rounded out the bottom-two positions to find themselves eliminated from the competition.
The three-to-four foot waves on offer at the main event site offered plenty of potential scoring opportunities for the surfers to unwind and show off their huge arsenal of tricks. The contests promised to be enthralling as the battles for survival continued.
The third heat pitted Osawa against Egiguren, Guedes and Vanner in a four-man battle for the Round 4 stop. The Japanese surfer got down to work early and collected a 5.93 off his first business-wave. Keeping the momentum going, he added an additional 6.60 points to his account, thus reaching a heat-total of 12.53 points. It remained unbeatable until the end to earn him victory.
Egiguren scored a 6.57 and 4.30 off his best-two waves to reach a heat-total of 10.87 points. The effort earned him runner-up place, consequently taking him through into the next round.
Guedes finished in third place with a heat-total of 10.86 points, while Vanner had to settle for fourth place after registering a heat-total of 10.53 points.
Macdonald took out the fourth heat after getting the better of Romero, Valentin and Appleton in an exciting four-man battle. The Australian surfer locked his first business-wave to post an impressive 7.00 on the score-board and went on to add an additional 5.93 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 12.93 points.
Romero collected a 6.93 and 4.13 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 11.06 points, which proved sufficient for a second-place finish.
Labo finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.06 points, while Appleton struggled to find his rhythm throughout the entirety of the content and eventually settled for a heat-total of 5.40 points.
