My telephone has been noisy with a noise very much like static on the line BT have been out and changed everything from the exchange to the house even fitted a radio filter. Noticed that it seems to happen when my washing machine is on and the drum is spinning could be a coinicidence but my broadband home hub disconnects and flashs but when machine is off line is clear and if hub light is flashing I can clear it by picking up the handset and getting a dial tone and this clears the broadband light and it turns green. Not sure what else I can do

  1. Seem like a problem with electromagnetic interference. Not sure there's much you can do about that type of problem.

  2. My judgment is that it is what we call electromagnetic interference.  When the washer is on and the drum is spinning there is a motor spinning the drum.  The commutator and brushes of the motor are making little sparks as the motor turns.  These sparks are converted to little pulses that are rich in radio signals.  They travel on the power line and are radiated into the telephone.  Wind the telephone line right at the phone as many times as you can on a 6 inch ferrite rod or use a large ferrite toroidal core if you can get one.  This makes what we call a radio "choke".  If your phone is a cordless phone that has a master unit with a cable that plugs into the wall at the master station then also wind a "choke" on the power cable leading into it.  Next try to get as much separation between any power line (especially the one to the washer) and the telephone line.  If they run side by side for any distance the noise pulses from the washer couple into the telephone line.  This could be the case in a wall and you won't be able to do much about it.  But at least separate the lines where you can get at them.  If you do these things it should help even if it does not eliminate the problem entirely.

Good luck and 73 from the Fisherman

  3. I take it you have DSL.  If the is the case you need a filter on every very voice line.  If they aren't already there.  If you use one of the wall mount jack filters with 2 outputs, make the phone and modem are connected to the proper jacks.  If the washer/dryer is causing the problem you may also need a noise filtering power strip for all of you electronics.

I don't like dsl, thats why I switched to cable.
