Question:

Nomenclature system???

Basically, I'm used to IUPAC standards for naming organic compounds

It really messes me up when people say "lauryl" and "acetyl", and I have a number of questions regarding this.

1) could someone tell me the basics of this system, including names of hydrocarbon stems, and maybe a few examples (I have seriously searched for this and found nothing conclusive)

2) does this system have a name?

3) WHY doesn't everyone use IUPAC... LIKE NORMAL PEOPLE?!?!?!

much appreciated :)

  1. I have to agree with mavster.  After all, Botanists (and us Horticulturalists) have been using the system that the Linnaeus put together many years ago.

And we can all praise Linnaeus for doing that. Some of the previous entries for plants were ten to fifteen word names.

Our laurels have the alternate name of Laurel noblis, unless you weren't thinking of bay. ;) Our stems are what hold things upright. Some are square, some are round. ;)  Better luck on the chemistry board!

  2. Hmm, I suspect you'd have more luck in the Chemistry section, rather than the Botany one.
