Question:

Non milk cheese that MELTS for pizza?

Can anyone here suggest a great dairy free (no animal milk products whatsoever) cheese? Are there any cheeses not made from soy either?

I have a severe allergy (anaphylaxis) to milk protein (casein, whey), and any traces of milk products (cow, sheep, goat, etc) can cause a potentially fatal reaction. Note that this is *NOT* the same as lactose intolerance, those people can often tolerate cheese, which has less lactose (milk sugar).

I need a cheese that has absolutely NO traces of dairy, as some soy cheeses do.

I'm hoping someone else out there with milk allergy or a vegan can help.

Help please!

  1. ive only seen vegan mozzarella cheese slices. i dont know if that would work but its mozzarella.

  2. Pure Coconut milk or Pure Coconut  cream  is not dairy and makes a good cheese.. it's hard to tell that cheese from the real thing!  Some Vegans won't eat it because of that!  It's far better than Soy Cheese but it's much more expensive too!  Your healthfood store will probably carry coconut cream cheese.. If not they might not mind ordering it for you if you want enough to make it worth their while!

  3. I use the brand Soya Kaas mozzarella cheese substitute...it comes in brick form so you have to grate it...but it  melts just like real cheese and tastes pretty good too.

I also use Tofutti American "cheese" slices for grilled cheese...they also melt well and taste good.

    Hope this helped!

  4. Then stop asking for cheese.   Cheese is made from milk.

       Soy  is  ....bean curd.

Soy is not milk either....so they should call it what it is:  bean juice.

Stop trying to get a product that is trying to be something else.

  5. Teese vegan cheese is the best thing out there.

  6. Follow Your Heart Vegan Gourmet mozzarella and Teese mozzarella will both melt on a pizza.  I think Teese tastes more like the real thing, but you'll likely have to mail order it (Vegan Essentials has it.)

Both are soy based, but totally vegan (not a l**k of dairy to be found.)

I haven't found anything resembling a feta, but sort of have an idea for using extra firm tofu and marinating it in chunks in something tangy enough to pass for feta (caper brine would probably be involved.)

  7. The best and most used vegan cheeses for melting and pizza are Follow Your Heart Vegan Gourmet and Teese. Cheezly, Sheese, Tofutti, and Veganrella are also good.

  8. We use "Vegan Gourmet".  It comes in many flavors.  We buy the mozzarella style for our pizza and the cheddar style for our mac and cheese.  It comes in one pound blocks and is a little softer in consistency than regular cheese.  It tastes great though...especially when you haven't had cheese in a long time!

I grate the mozzarella over the crust once I have spread the sauce.  Then I add the toppings like fresh mushrooms, vegan pepperoni or Canadian bacon, etc.-

I live near the capitol in Pennsylvania...I guess it depends where you live.  If you can't get what I use you may have to work with what you can get.  Invest $5.00 in a grater.  It only takes me 2 minutes to grate the cheese.  It's well worth it!
