Question:

Non-penicillin Augmentin equivalent? Allergic reaction to augmentin?

After 4 days on Augmentin 825 2x daily, I started feeling swollen. My abdomen seemed swollen, and I had some hand swelling too. Yesterday, my one hand swelled up so much it was crazy, and almost difficult to straighten.

I went off the augmentin - I didn't take it last night or this morning, and this afternoon I am already feeling less swollen.

My doctor thinks it's just an inflammatory reaction to the chronic infection (a dental bone infection) I've been fighting. I'm having the source of the infection removed next week (a failed root canal tooth).

But for now I don't know what to do. I'm taking the Augmentin in conjunction with clindamycin 300mg 3x a day.

I do feel worse infection-wise after going off the Augmentin, but like I said, I do feel less swollen.

  1. Well it is difficult to say if this is an actual allergic reaction or what your doctor actually says it is.  Normally, if you were allergic to Augmentin you would have had a reaction way before the 4th day, probably even the first day.  I would say just see if you can get on a non-penicillin antibiotic just in case, but I doubt you are allergic to it.

  2. being swollen has nothing to do with the antibiotic. KEEP TAKING IT!

  3. Angioedema is the rapid swelling (edema) of the skin, mucosa and submucosal tissues. Apart from the common form, mediated by allergy, it has been reported as a side effect of some medications, specifically ACE inhibitors.

Augmentin is composed of 2 drugs: amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. Clindamycin is another strong antibiotic. For a tooth infection, taking 2 strong antibiotics at a time seems too much. If you have taken Clindamycin alone before & had no adverse effect, you can ask your doctor if can stop taking Augmentin & just continue with the Clindamycin.

  4. you are talking about the side effect of the antibiotic with a large effect

amoxicilin +clovanic acid that mean that he killed allot of a good bacterias at your body after 4 days i did not think that you are allergic you have  to tray another solution

    tray amoxicilin 500g every 8 h

    aminoglocozidic antibiotics like eritromecin
