  1. Many schools have a recycling program.  I know Madison Junior High School in Naperville on River Oaks Dr. accepts batteries, cell phone, shoes (in good condition) as well as other things I don't remember.  Maybe you can contact the school and ask for Mike who is in charge of the Environmental Club there.  I hope this helps!

  2. Did you know that regular batteries are NOT recyclable, however rechargeable batteries are recyclable?

Furthermore, we are not supposed to throw either rechargeable or non-rechargeable batteries into our regular trash, since most dumps can not handle the toxic metals that will eventually leak out of all batteries. Most cities and counties have hazardous waste collection centers that collect both types of batteries. These centers send regular non-rechargeable batteries to special landfills that can handle toxic wastes from leaking batteries, and these centers send rechargeable batteries to recycling plants.

The following batteries are safe to put in your trash:

Alkaline batteries that were purchased after 2/1/1992.

    All Carbon Zinc non-rechargeable batteries.

Silver oxide non-rechargeable batteries should be placed in a hazardous material dump.  These batteries can not be placed in the trash.

But to answer your question most end up in dump sites, some are buried in some unknown areas. Recycling plant for non rechargeable batteries is only in our fantasy,
