Non-resident alien in France?

Question

I know a fellow in the french forgein legion. When he gets out he can become a french citizen, return to the usa maintaining citizenship or become a non resident alien of france. Can Non resident aliens of France go as they please in and out of france. What do you have to do to maintain that privilege?

When you join the French Foreign Legion, you forfeit previous citizenship.

When you are honourably discharged, you may be granted French citizenship.

Or else, your may reclaim your former citizenship, but this is not automatic, Americans notably are not given it back.
