Does anyone know a toothpaste (not just a brand) that does NOT protect against tartar?

  1. uhhhhh why

  2. Tartar is the lay term for calculus, which is a mineralised form of plaque that can't be removed by brushing, although the dentist/hygienist can remove it with special tools. It looks like a white layer, usually near the neck of the teeth, closest to the gumline.

Plaque in turn is a build up of bacteria on teeth, known as a biofilm. It's soft, sticky and creamy white in appearance, and is easily removed by brushing regularly. If it's left for long enough it causes decay, and if it's left in the presence of minerals (from your saliva and diet) it can harden and become tartar. For this reason, tartar usually builds up where it's difficult to brush.

So for your question - any toothpaste prevents plaque, as does the action of brushing. Therefore, and toothpaste/toothbrush can prevent or protect against tartar.

    Hope that helped!
