Non-tendered contracts: Milwaukee Brewers to make final decision on Friday – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers are reviewing their options to tender contracts to the players before they become arbitration-eligible by Friday. The teams must decide by 11 pm whether they want to offer contracts to the players or let them be non-tendered.
Chris Narveson, Manny Parra are among those the Brewers are to make a final decision. Before the November 30, the club is to tender contracts. Speculations were rife as to who the Brewers will eventually tender a contract.
Narveson’s name has surfaced as the likely candidate for it, while Parra may well be left non-tendered.
Part of the reason why that possibility may materialise is the fact that Narveson missed the 2011 season due to an injured elbow. The past year, there were less of signs indicating that he has improved.
Parra had 5.02 ERA in his 42 games (16 of which were actually starts), with 3-10 record. In 2012, his 5.06 ERA in just over 58 innings, having a 2-3 record with 61 strike-outs to his credit.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Brewers had earlier parted ways with two of their relievers. Kameron Loe and Jose Veras became free agents. Add to it Parra’s name, Brewers’ next move is expected to be made after due deliberations.
However, both Loe and Veras still stand a chance to be offered a contract. That is what the general manager Doug Melvin said when asked about the free agent relievers. "It was a matter of us looking to improve our bullpen," Melvin said. "They're still available. We can still sign them."
Importantly, the Brewers did not want to go into a long process of contract offers earlier in this regard. With others moves afoot, Brewers' general manager spoke of the obligations that the team has.
"Now we can look at other pitchers that are going to be available, guys who are non-tenders themselves, and everybody else," Melvin said. "There might be someone available that makes you say, 'OK, I've had to tender these [in-house] guys contracts and I wish I wouldn't have.' But there's no way out. You have some obligations to them."
It will be interesting to see what moves the Brewers take as the fans will be looking forward to a successful 2013 regular season.
