Question:

Non-toxic plant?

Hi! I am a corporate nurse consultant for 3 long term care facilities in Oklahoma. I am starting a hydration program for our residents and am going to use a plant in each patient's room to serve as a reminder to the staff to "water the residents".

Do you all know of a good, NON-TOXIC plant that I can put in each resident's room? Obviously I would need one that didn't require a great deal of sunlight and is somewhat hardy.

Thanks so much for your help! :)

  1. I'd recommend Parlour Palms, as these are pretty tough, will manage with restricted light availabilty, and easy to care for.  Also Sansevieria, mother in law's tongue, are very easy, don't need much watering - let's hope they give the residents more!

African violets (Saintpaulia ionantha) are also pretty, can bloom for long periods,  and aren't toxic.    A Christmas Cactus would also do well, don't need tons of care, and brighten up rooms over the Christmas period - natural decorations!

Hope these ideas help.  Good luck!  Rob

  2. Parrot Ferns. They like indirect sun light, do well in pots, and don't put out pollens to inflame allergies.

  3. I think I have the perfect plant for you, ZZ plant. They had them at the garden center. They are pretty nice plants.

I don't know of a plant that is supposed to be as tolerant as this one.
