Question:

Non-verbal learning disability?

Hello,

I was diagnosed with a nonverbal learning disability about a year ago. As of now, I haven't been able to find too much about this disability, and definitely not been able to network with others who also suffer from it.

Does anyone have this disability or know someone who has it? Also, does anyone know of online resources offering information, blogs, and forums related to this disability?

Thanks!

  1. Never heard of it but there are many links on Google

  2. www.schwablearning.org is a great site for this information

  3. Well, there are 2 learning styles:

Verbal thought - think in words

Non-verbal thought - think in pictures (another name is visual-spatial learner)

We can all think in both modes but when it comes to learning, we tend to specialize.

It is rare, but sometimes a non-verbal thinker may not have verbal thought.

Obviously, you are non-verbal thinker.  Non-verbal thinkers do not learn well using word methods.  Unfortunately, most teachers use only word thinking methods, leaving your learning style unaddressed.

Is the reason you have been labeled with a non verbal learning disability because you are struggling with reading?

Non-verbal thinkers do not think with the sounds of words and therefore can have trouble sounding out words and spelling.

If you will share more about your learning challenges, I may be able to share more with you.

  4. The term Nonverbal Learning Disability indicates an impairment of nonverbal communication (this is the opposite of the post from The Reading Helper).  You are probably a highly verbal person and prefer to communicate that way.  A good resource for you would be a post that I belong to as a parent of a 13 yr old who has a classic case of NLD.  Delphi Forums runs it, it's called NLD Forum (you'll need to request an invitation to join).  This'll get you in contact with people who do understand your specific needs.  Another resource Is NLDline (just google this).  It has lots of links and info.

    Good Luck

  5. Check out superduper publishers for a book called The Source for Non-verbal Learning Disabilities or check under that topic on Amazon for books. This is a relatively new category of diagnosis and it's not one of the larger ones or trendy, like autism, so you may have trouble finding others with similar abilities. Check with the place where you were diagnosed and inquire about a group or starting a support group. Maybe you could start one in your area or on-line!
