Question:

Non-vested amount in 401 (k)?

I have about 33% of the employer's contribution as non-vested in my 401 K plan from work. I have now quit that employer. If I had stayed with the the employer that 33% would have become vested in a year.

So now does this non-vested mean that those 33% of employer's contribution will disappear from my account any day (now that I have quit), or it will stay in the account and become vested in a year and it will be mine to keep?

  1. Sorry, it's going to go away. Your not going to get it.

  2. It will disappear.  the idea of a vested amount is as an enticement for employees to stay at least as long as the vesting period.

  3. When you quit, the non-vested part of the account is returned to the company.  You don't get to keep it.
