Nonios turns in a bullet work ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Classic
Jerry Hollendorfer trainer decent looking 3-year-old colt, Nonios, is a Grade 1, $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic contender, and why shouldn’t he be, after his brilliant run in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes to finish second to the Classic favourite, Game on Dude at Santa Anita Park on 29 September, 2012.
However, tune-ups are part of the game, and Jerry Hollendorfer has been keeping an eye on the Pleasantly Perfect colt, and on 30 October, 2012, the horseman sent out his Classic contender for a four furlong work, and the colt responded by turning in a bullet work.
It was recorded fastest among 19 runners over the same distance, and under jockey Martin Pedroza, Nonios was officially clocked in at 46 2/5 seconds, but his trainer timed the move in 47 2/5 seconds, and as for the fractional splits he clocked the runner going quarter mile in 12 2/5 seconds to 23 3/5 seconds, and half-mile in 35 2/5 seconds.
With his routine workouts, Jerry Hollendorfer plans to walk the 3-year-old Classic contender, Nonios, on 31 October, 2012, and the horseman also wants to provide his colt with gate time experience ahead of the 1 ¼ mile race, as he is scheduled to stand in the gate two or three times leading up to the 3 November, World Championships.
However, Jerry Hollendorfer will make a short trip to Northern California at Golden Gate Fields, and will return to the Southern part of the state on 1 November, 2012.
"He went little faster than I expected," said Hollendorfer. "But I told Martin to let him go if he was doing things easy. He was doing it that way; pretty much breezing."
Out of Touch Gold’s mare Stylish Manner, Nonios will be taking the Classic field by winning the Grade 3 Affirmed Stakes over Betfair Hollywood Park’s cushion track, in his graded stakes debut.
He held well since, and was placed second in the Grade 2 Swaps Stakes, and the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational to winner, Paynter, on 29 July, but finished off board for the first time when he finished fifth in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes.
