Nonito Donaire nails Jeffrey Mathebula to grab IBF super bantamweight title – Boxing News
Nonito Donaire, the WBO super bantamweight champion, not only successfully defended his title but also dethroned Jeffrey Mathebula, the former IBF super bantamweight champion, from his reign, in a 12-round bout held on July 7, 2012.
Despite the fact that two world titles were on the line, the bout did not gather much praise from the crowd, most probably because of the below par and lacklustre performance put forth by the duo.
Nonito, widely known as ‘The Filipino Flash’, was entering his career’s 30th bout, boasting 28 wins and just one loss. Since his career’s only loss the 29-year-old has never lost even a single bout.
His opponent, Jeffrey is being dubbed far and wide as a tough pugilist with high levels of resilience. Also known as ‘Mongoose’, the South African was entering the ring with the IBF title round his waist.
It was Donaire who started things off in an authoritative manner but Jeffrey retaliated Filipino Flash’s every strike with great force. The bout went toe-to-toe and the whole crowd praised Jeffrey for being the brawler with skills, force and power.
Even after the bout Nonito and his trainer, Robert Garcia, admitted that they did not perform well and should have opted for a knockout. Nonito adopted the defensive style and did not attack the taller Jeffrey with substantial power.
The only facet that highlighted Donaire’s performance was his agile movement and great speed. It was his speed that allowed him to connect large number of jabs to Mathebula’s body and face.
Even the score card proved that Nonito was able to win the bout by those low-powered strikes. All the three judges awarded the bout and the IBF super bantamweight title to Nonito by 119-108, 117-110, and 118-109 scores.
A glance at the performance of the duo shows that Jeffrey was an easy target and he could have easily been knocked out had Nonito performed well. Robert, while sharing his thoughts commented, “We could have done better,”
Nonito himself was not happy with his performance and stated, “It was okay. We could have done better, but it was a process. As long as people were entertained, I’m happy. I’m happy, because that’s what I’m here for. I want to put on a show for the people.
But I’ll definitely try to do much better next time.
A win is a win whether by an inch or by a mile therefore Nonito now just needs to concentrate on revamping his firepower, agility and above all resilience and should not look back at his below par performance against Jeffrey.
