Nonito Donaire ready to fight Abner Mares but Bob Arum says no – Boxing news
The Filipino Flash, Nonito Donaire, who is a two-division world champion and has won five titles in three different boxing weight classes, has accepted to take on the International Boxing Federation’s and World Boxing Council’s Silver Champion, Abner Mares,
after his recent win over Joseph Agbeko.
The 28-year-old Filipino-American pugilist, Donaire, who has won 26 of his 27 fights, with 18 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, told the media he will take on anyone in October.
“Like I said before, I'll fight anyone who steps in the ring on October with me. It would depend if they (Golden Boy) agree to put him in the ring with me,” Donaire said.
Mares’ on the same note also wanted to have a mega showdown against Donaire, who is rated as the number three pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, as he said it before beating Agbeko.
However, Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum is not willing to go for the bout between Donaire and Mares because there are a lot of controversies going on right now against the Mexican unbeaten warrior, Mares.
The 25-year-old Mares, who has won 21 of his 22 professional fights (1 Draw), with 13 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, landed numerous low blows against Agbeko but was ignored by the referee, Russell More.
Therefore, Arum reckons Mares should first give the King Kong, Agbeko, a rematch and then the winner should take on Donaire.
He said, “Mares should do is to give this guy a rematch. I think that the IBF is going to order a rematch because that was not good…Donaire would be pleased to fight the winner of the rematch in a heartbeat, without any question. We’ll fight the winner of
the rematch between Mares-Agbeko. But to go in and to have Donaire fight Mares now, when he clearly had a questionable victory, that wouldn’t make much sense.”
Let’s see if Mares gives Agbeko a chance of fighting him again or not.
