Nonito Donaire wins split decision over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. – Boxing news
Nonito Donaire, the Filipino Flash, won a split decision over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. to bag the vacant WBO super bantamweight title.
It was Nonito’s first attempt at the junior featherweight level on Saturday night at the Alamodome. The event that was headlined by Chavez vs. Rubio saw the Filipino Flash adding yet another title to his portfolio.
Nonito, the former undisputed WBC and WBO Bantamweight, Interim WBA Super Flyweight, and IBF Flyweight Champion, exhibited his skills and potential in an astounding way amusing everyone out there who thought the Filipino Flash is overrated.
After the fight, on Wilfredo’s performance, the Filipino remarked, “Vazquez was tougher than I expected. I couldn't find my rhythm, and I hurt my hand somewhere between the second and fourth rounds. I could only move it a little bit.”
Throughout the fight, both fighters had their best and worst moments. Most of the time it was Donaire who looked frustrated as he was unable to spot his opponent’s weak point throughout the fight. However, even though Vazquez seemed to be the tougher man,
Donaire made it to the mark earlier.
The third round was of most importance for the Filipino Flash, since he was able to get his hands on Vazquez with a combination and numerous powerful and speedy shots, restricting the opponent in one corner.
By the end of the round, Vazquez was able to come out of the deadly blows to attack his opponent and he did so successfully but then fell to the mat when he missed his shot. This instance marked the end of Vazquez as it showed that he is already half way
down to losing the fight.
Nevertheless, Vazquez kept coming back making Nonito furious and frustrated. Since the Filipino Flash is a young fighter, he lacks the level of resistance and serenity found in most experienced fighters which could have become the cause of his defeat but
he successfully managed his anger to win the title.
Expressing his frustration after the fight, the Filipino stated, “When I knocked him down in the ninth round, that was the end of the hand. I was in agony.”
