Norbert Haug lauds Michael Schumacher show in Canadian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss Norbert Haug has said that the team driver Michael Schumacher gave his best performance of the 2011 Formula 1 season at the recently held Canadian Grand Prix.
He also mentioned that after the Montreal race, he believes Schumacher can deliver a strong performance in the remainder of the ongoing season.
The seven-time world champion had a strong race weekend in Montreal, where he successfully finished his Friday practice sessions and qualifying among the strong rivals.
Schumacher was struggling for his podium finish since the start of the race. After a long red flag due to heavy rain, the German had a very close fight with the top runners. He successfully beat the Ferrari driver Felipe Massa and Renault’s Vitaly Petrov
and ended up in the fourth place.
The Canadian race performance of Schumacher has impressed the team very much. Haug said, “This is what happens in sport – you can turn thing around quickly. Ultimately you need results, and the one here was a very respectable one. We did it with Ralf [Schumacher]
in DTM too – where he got criticism but now he is delivering good results.”
Haug told the media that he is sure if Mercedes provide him a perfect car, he can give them great results. He further added that the 42-year-old driver is still capable of fighting current competitors for the 2011 world championship.
Apart from that, the Mercedes motorsport boss talked about speculations surrounding Schumacher’s future at the team beyond the 2012 season.
He went on to mention, “I have heard the speculation – and how it was interpreted into my comments. But that wasn't the meaning of my comments - let me put it that way. We have said that I have a three-year deal, and at the right moment in time we will talk
about what will happen in the future.”
After an impressive race weekend in Montreal, Mercedes are expecting more improvements from Schumacher for the next races of the ongoing season.
