Norbert Haug says F1 engines supplier should get together to discuss V4 – Formula1
Mercedes president, Norbert Haug, has urged all Formula 1 engine suppliers to meet and discuss the V4 decision before the Formula 1 officials give their final verdict at the end of this month.
Haug added that Mercedes are prepared to do a switch from the current V8 to V4 for the 2013 Formula 1 season if all the engine manufacturers agree to do so. Haug stated, “I think establishing rules and then have only two, three manufacturers who are committed
is just a problematic situation that needs to be solved together and that needs a decent discussion. But as you see there are some discussions, some problems whether all these [existing] manufacturers are committed.”
He further added that if the Formula 1 is to shift to the V4 engines than one or two more engine suppliers should be invited to the talks.
“You have the four manufacturers [but it] would be preferably to have probably a new one, or probably more new ones who are interested,” added Haug.
Haug added that there are only four engine suppliers in the current Formula 1 season and not all of them are on the same page about the engine regulations.
Renault stated that they will quit Formula 1 if the shift to V4 is delayed beyond 2013. Whereas the other three suppliers, Mercedes, Ferrari and Cosworth stated that the shift to V4 will take some time and technology, which will in turn increase the budget
of the team.
Previously Formula 1 Supremo, Bernie Ecclestone, is reported to have been in efforts to clamp down on the V4 engine for the 2013 season. Ecclestone was of the view point that international Automobile Federation’s (FIA) boss Jean Todt bypassed all motor racing
authorities to bring out this new rule which will ruin the image of Formula 1 racing.
Nevertheless, all teams still do not agree to change the engines for the 2013 season and it will be interesting to see what decision the World Motor Sport Council take by the end of June.
