Norbert Haug says Nico Rosberg could stay at Mercedes GP for more five seasons – Formula 1 news
Mercedes-Benz motorsport president Norbert Haug has said that their Formula 1 team driver Nico Rosberg could stay at Mercedes GP until 2016.
Rosberg seems to be improving since the last three races of the 2011 season. However, the Petronas-sponsored team wants him with them for more five years, as they believe he can fight for the team.
Haug added, “I am counting on him being with us in 2012, and if it is up to me, a lot longer as well.”
The German is quite satisfied with his current team, as he considers that Mercedes is the best platform for him to fight with the strong competitors of Formula 1. He mentioned that it was his wish to achieve his career goals with the Silver Arrow car.
On the other hand, Mercedes boss Ross Brawn said that Rosberg might have to wait for the 2012 car. He believes the MGP-W03 will be an excellent machine, which can put the team on the front in races and would be a winner in the next year.
Brawn added, “We had to squeeze out pretty much everything to win the championship (as Brawn GP) in 2009, and we paid the price for that (in 2010). We have all the elements we need to have an excellent car next season. Power in Formula 1 goes in cycles,
and normally its five years. I am aware of this personally since my days at Ferrari.”
The team introduced a perfect Mercedes car for this season, but still it is unable to show its best run on the grid. Before the start of the season, they expected a lot from their car and believed it would be a race winner in 2011. However, their new car
has so far failed to match the pace of Red Bull, McLaren or Ferrari.
Both Mercedes drivers Rosberg and Michael Schumacher admitted that they did not get a positive response from their W02 car in the season so far.
After the recently held Monaco Grand Prix, Mercedes have decided to use some new parts in their car for the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix which will take place on June 12, 2011 in Montreal.
