Norbert Haug says first priority is to provide reliable car to Michael Schumacher – Formula 1 news
Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Vice-President, Norbert Haug has said that their first priority is to provide a competitive car to their driver, Michael Schumacher who has been seen struggling in the season so far.
The seven-time world champion has only been able to score 2 points in the season so far and has retired in five out of first seven grands prix.
He struggled with the gearbox issue in the season opener held at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia. Later, he faced problem with his tyre which was not fitted properly during the pit stop in the third race at Shanghai International Circuit in China.
Furthermore, he faced DRS activation issues in the fourth race at Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir. Afterwards, he retired due to fuel pressure failure in the sixth race at Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo.
Over and above, he had a DRS malfunction which caused his retirement in the seventh race at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal.
It will be important to mention that the record championship holder has delivered some impressive performances in the qualifying of several grands prix. Conversely, he could not convert his competitive grid positions into a podium finish in either of the
race.
Nevertheless, Haug said that they are trying their best to resolve the issues of the veteran German driver and are focusing to provide him with a reliable car for the approaching races. Moreover, he also admired the performance of Schumacher’s teammate,
Nico Rosberg who took his maiden victory in the Chinese GP.
“The European Grand Prix will be the third consecutive race on a temporary circuit after Monaco and Canada. Our priority for the next race is to achieve the same standard of reliability for Michael's car that we have seen so far this year with Nico's, who
has completed all racing laps so far this season. Since his win at the Chinese Grand Prix on 15 April, no other driver has scored more points than Nico. The target is to continue that trend,” he said.
Meanwhile, legendary Schumacher expressed that he is not feeling disappointed with his team and is confidently looking forward to perform well in the European GP which is to be held at Valencia Street Circuit in Spain on June 24.
