Question:

Normal temperature for newborns?

I contracted a case of the flu 3 days ago and have been keeping a check on my Daughter's health. She just turned 3wks old yesterday. So far she has been fine. But I have been hearing conflicting information about what the temp should be for an infant. Some say the normal temp is around 37 (celsius). But then I hear others say it should be around 36c.

Also, I heard that when newborns get sick their temperature possibly drops. Has anyone heard that one before? Thanks for your help. Cheers.

  1. i had my little boy 4 days ago, when he was born his temp was high then it dropped low, he was on a heated mattress set at 37.5  (thats what they were trying to get him to, but he stayed at 36.6 and they said that he was absolutly fine at that so id say around the 36-37 mark is pretty normal, its just finding a temp around that which is normal for your baby, just keep him wrapped up and regular temp checks.  there temp can also drop when they are sick because they use there energy to get better and not to keep warm, thats why they need keeping wrapped up and warm so that they can use there energy to help them through these early days!

  2. I'm pretty sure she should be 37. I'm unsure about a newborns temperature dropping due to illness though.

    Is she feeling cold?

If you are concerned, take her along to the doctors. Better to be safe than sorry, right?

  3. Between 36 & 37 is ok. if its over 37 keep an eye on it and watch for lethargy. If it drops below 36 keep warm with wraps. Temperature usually only drops if they newborn itself is cold and needs extra warmth but do keep checking just in case.
