Normal to be very negative/pessimistic with little sleep?

I don't sleep much as it is, but just the other night my friend and I stayed up till 7:30 AM watching movies. From that time until about 12:00 is all I slept, and this very night I feel negative and...sad? Is there a way to get less sleep but still remain optimistic, or is this a normal reaction to sleep deprivation?

  1. i guess if you get little sleep occasionally it is ok,

    but not all the time

lack of sleep can make you feel like you are drunk

can be very bad for your health

you also need to eat healthy, possibly take vitamins

  2. As a mental health professional with two decades experience, I can tell you that any deprivation the body feels, whether it be sleep, food, water, sunlight, etc., is going to cause the body / mind to experience depression in all it's facets, so, occasional loss of sleep is okay, but too much, and you're going to be diagnosable, when all you needed was more sleep.  God Bless you.

  3. sleep deprivation can actually cause psychosis. it's just not a good idea. sleep is important as it is the time your body and mind repair themselves. Get plenty of good sleep and you will feel so much better.

  4. It's a normal reaction. During my first year of college, I worked about 30 hrs/wk. and went to school fulltime. I slept at around 1:00am until about 5:00am everyday (on weekends I would start work early). I felt groggy, always had migraines, the sun bothered me a lot and I didn't have time for a life- so I got very depressed. I did this for about 2 years and have not realy ever gotten over my depression (I'm 22 now). Get as much sleep as you can, it's good for you.

  5. Depression, low energy are just a tiny part of what lack of sleep does to our bodies. If we don't get enough sleep we get foggy headed, our pain levels increase while our pain tolerance drops, we grow forgetful, confused. Our bodies heal while we sleep so illness or injury stays longer with those who don't get enough sleep.

All that said, 4 1/2 hours is enough if it is solid, uninterrupted sleep. Maybe your sadness was triggered in part by one of your old movies?
