North American Goalies not finding much to do abroad during Lockout -NHL Update
While some of the biggest names in the National Hockey League (NHL) have already departed from North America and are gearing up to make their debut with different leagues around the world, goalies are having a tough time searching out a suitable gig and
do not find anything to be up to their standards.
The goalie position on the ice is one which is certainly very limited as there are mostly a maximum of three goaltenders on a franchise squad, and clubs always focus on securing their top three men right from the start.
One of those goalies that are having a tough time finding something to do abroad is Ottawa Senators’ veteran net minder, Craig Anderson, who is certainly practicing patience and is waiting for the right opportunity in order to spend some quality time on
foreign ice instead of hurrying for what he  might regret later on.
“It’s not just a matter of finding a job ... it’s a matter of finding a job and making sure that the player is protected now and in the future,” Anderson’s agent, Justin Duberman, said from his Chicago office Saturday, according to the OttawaSun.com.
“There is a lot of risk in going over. There’s a lot of great things about going over as well from a hockey standpoint, but you have to make sure you protect yourself from an insurance standpoint to make sure it’s a great opportunity,” Duberman added.
Strengthening his case, Duberman also pointed out how some of the top goalies like Los Angeles Kings Jonathan Quick and Montreal Canadiens Carey Price are still in North America and have not come out with anything in this regard as of yet.
Most of the clubs around either the Swiss or Russian leagues are always on the lookout for defensemen and forwards, but very rarely, one might advertise a vacant position for a goalie to come and fill, especially someone that would demand a lot more money
compared to their local counterparts.
Being a veteran goaltender also makes it harder for teams to make a decision due to insurance costs and such financial aspects, forcing them to limit that position for the youngsters in that category.
