North Carolina Tar Heels rout Evansville 97-48: NCAA Basketball Recap
North Carolina Tar Heels have looked solid in the NCAA Basketball Tournament 2011 so far. They have only lost two games and those two were also close losses.
Just few hours ago, they improved their record to 7-2 by humiliating a fragile Evansville Aces side 97-48 at their home. They will be playing most of their remaining games at home now and this might help them in augmenting their
record further.
Heels came into this game as clear favourites; however a fight was expected from Aces, which they terribly failed to put. The game was so one sided that it was already over by the end of first frame as Heels got ahead by 30 points.
The next half was just a practice for Heels as they employed all of their bench players to prepare them for the next outing.
Harrison Barnes marshalled Heels with a game high 17 points including 6 for 7 from the free throw line. Reggie Bullock scored 15 while John Henson and Tyler Zeller both completed a double-double, by scoring 13 points, 12 rebounds
and 12 points 10 rebounds respectively.
Their coach Roy Williams was satisfied;
"We are experienced but we are also still fairly young, too. It's a pretty good blend. We talked about (how) we have a stretch here where we play a lot of games at home. This is one of them. We've got to try to get better. ...
Let's use this to help our team."
Barnes netted two free throws in the opening minute to open the scoring for the winning side. Denver Holmes then drilled a three from the other side to get Aces ahead 3-2; the only instance in the game when Aces got ahead of Heels.
Heels responded with a 17-6 run, capped by P.J Hairston free throw in the next few minutes to make it 19-9 and never looked back after that. A 14-5 burst midway through the half followed by a 17-5 in the last few minutes allowed
them to take control of the game and at the end of the first frame, the Heels were leading by 52-22.
The lead extended to mammoth 41 points, 74-33, in the 9th minute of the second half after Kendall Marshall lifted a driving layup. In the next few minutes, another unanswered 14-2 surge capped by Jackson Simmons propelled
the advantage to 50 plus points, triggering a humiliating end for the Aces.
