  1. the north is still very divided but i live in the southern part of the republic and the only time i ever see or hear about it is on tv. its not in your face and as a person new to the country, you may feel safer in the republic

  2. How big is the chip on your shoulder, welly boots?

Bigotry in the south?! That's a laugh! If you want bigotry look no further than the land of Ulster, not including Monaghan, Cavan and Donegal.

The Republic of Ireland is like a shangri-la compared to the "stuck in the past" attitudes of the North.

Nice one DeBurca! Terry Tibbs, talk to me!

  3. I could laugh at some of the comments made here by members of the irish banana republic who have been financed up to the neck by the eeu while poor old ulster had to fight her way to get acceptance and there is bigotry down south mostly by the catholic church. Northern ireland is cleaner just as friendly tell you what try both and then let us know. HEY  ,THOUGHT  THE LAND OF HONEY SORRY MONEYWEREN'T BIGOTED YOU ALL JUST LOVE US BRITS .

  4. I have lived in both.

The north can be very sectarian depending on the area, although everybody has a sense of culture and obviously prefers their side!

The south if way difference! Nobody cares what religion you are!

I prefer the North (although I am a Catholic and Irish, I considered myself Irish in the North aswell)

If you'd like to know Catholic or Protestant areas in th eNorth email me!

  5. I am a Brit who was bought up a protestant and I have seen no evidence of religious discrimination let alone fighting in the two and a half years I have lived in the republic.

My daughter finished her schooling here and I myself run a business selling directly to the Irish public.

The Irish people in the republic are friendly, welcoming and toleratant and more than happy to welcome non-catholics.

  6. This thing about fighting about relegion is nonsence really, Iv been living in Rep of Ireland all my life and noticed nothing of it at all, if you go into the wrong areas then you will get it.. maybe?! certain towns in the north have "aquafresh" pavements and union jacks up etc but nothing major! =)

  7. Bitching about religion is a national pastime in Ireland, but the really nasty stuff that's been in the news has maiinly been in Northern Ireland. That said, most people there try to be neutral about it now, as it has caused so many upsets in the past.

In the south, the Republic, nobody really cares ....

  8. Go DEBURCA!!! That is without a doubt the best answer I have ever seen on this site. Give yourself a clap on the back buddy!!!!!

P.S wellyboots, the uk which includes Northern Ireland is also part of the EU and receives finance off the EU council,as does every country that is part of the EU. And we actually do love brits, even dumbass saps like yourself.

  9. there has never been a religious problem in the Republic of ireland it was always confined to northern ireland and still is.  Although the fighting in northern ireland has stopped the divide between the two religions in northern ireland is still great, drive down parts of derry or belfast and this will be clear, even in smallish towns like coleraine and villages like Bushmills the sectarian divide is there for all to see on the roadside and hanging outside the different houses.

if you want to get away from all the nationalist/loyalist/religious stuff then stay away from northern ireland.  In the republic all races, creeds and religions live side by side, i am happy to say i have friends who are muslim, mormon, evangelical and jehovah witness and i live in the republic

  10. well northern ireland was where the troubles happened, and where there has been violence obviously, as this was the area they were fighting over so obviously Northern Ireland, the republic really has no religious problems now.

You would still have to be careful in some areas, and at certain times of the year, but mostly you will be welcomed into a lot of areas, regardless of which religion they follow.

People in Northern Ireland are geniunly friendly, and nowadays Protestants and Catholics mix more.

Coming from a Protestant northern irish family, i would still feel more at home in an area which was obviously protestant, (union jack flags etc,) than Catholic. There is always violence going on in selected areas, its just not reported about in major UK news.

To be honest, if you were moving to Northern Ireland, it would depend where you moved to, and whether you were religious, or were prepared to live in a particularly religious area.

If you were a muslim, Hindu etc it would be better to live in the republic, but if you were a Protestant or Catholic, living in an area which shares your religion would be benificial.

  11. I wouldn't worry about it really that much anymore..  Unless you've got a reason to....Don't worry about it..it isnt' that bad ayy more.   But one thing remains the same; more people have been killed; and wars fought over an invisible man in the sky that is watching you 24/7, and is the judge in a "Kangaroo Court" thrown together real quick right after you die..  The invisible boss, will either reward you by sending you to an party that never ends; or down in some othre ivisible place where you sweat all day...and there's no air conditioning... and everybody there has done something really bad ro be there..

    SAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttt?????????

Millions of people believe that,,,,  So,, watch out wherever you go as they are all around you and me, and they appear on the outstide to be perfectly sane...

  12. If you are serious about keeping away from a religious divide then keep away from the North. As other answers have said the Republic has none of that nonsense anymore - but it used to, silly to say that it never had any - but there are still pockets in the north - so best to keep away really.

Each 'side' is as bad as the other, towns like Coleraine will have areas painted red, white and blue and areas in Derry are painted green, white and orange to show the various allegiances.

  13. We in the republic give 30 billion a year in fishing rights to europe alone, irish terrestrial waters are the most lucrative in europe and we are in the top 3 gdp per capita and number one on the eoi`s best country to live, The republic had the guts to go out on our own and cut the apron strings from the "shittish empire". NI has never stood on its own two feet.

Oh and p.s. the republic gave 7 billion in infastructrial aid to the north last year.

The only thing green in northen ireland is the green eyed monster of jealosy as we made it and ye could not find yer **** in the dark with a flash light without help from the UK.

I am not bigotted i am just proud of my counrty.
