North Ireland?

I've just read a article on North Ireland and how Britain/UK's army is pulling out! But I thought it was part of of the UK? So why were they there?! I'm very confused.

  1. i think it is  big step... and could be seen as a historic blow to the remnants of the British empire..I think with the army pulling out of the north,many nationalist families will sleep better at night and can get on  with their lives again,, the British army weren't exactly welcome in the north and I think it's been a while coming.. if we can just get them to Pull out of Basra and Kabul.. then things will be even better


  2. the british army were in northern ireland as peacekeepers, the fact that they are leaving shows that there is now peace in northern ireland, which is still part of britain.

  3. ^ What he said, might I add it is inevitable that N. Ireland will rejoin its comrades in the South in the near future.

  4. the British army were sent in, because the police of Northern Ireland could not cope with the increased hostilities and violence between the catholics and protestants.

    There is still an army in N Ireland, but it will be the same as an army base in any other part of the UK and Ireland.

    ie, used for civil duties, rather than keeping the peace
